HHC- hexahydrocannabinol

New synthetic cannabinoids are on the market and one of them is HHC (hexahydrocannabinol). This compound is very similar in chemical structure to THC and therefore logically and expectedly also shows psychoactive activity.

What is HHC?

The HHC molecule is chemically hydrogenated THC (isomer Δ8-Δ9-Δ10), which means that the double bond in the ring is converted into a single bond to form a racemic mixture (9R and 9S HHC). The hydrogenation process is familiar to us from the food industry, where it is used, for example, for the conversion of liquid vegetable oils into semi-solid margarine.

The figure shows the chemical structural difference between HHC and THC (acid forms):

What are the effects of HHC?

HHC is psychoactive, but how this activity compares with some other cannabinoids is shown in the figure below. The psychoactivity of HHC is at least comparable to that of Δ8 THC.

Are there any known derivatives of HHC?

Yes, two are known, HHC-O, the acetylated form of HHC, and HHC-P (hexahydrocannabiphthorol ). Their psychogenic effects are even more pronounced in comparison to HHC, and may therefore exceed those of THC.

Can you test positive for HHC in a drug test?

11-Hydroxy-THC is a metabolite of THC and is found in most tests for cannabis. It is very likely that the metabolite of HHC will also be similar, although there is no firm evidence yet. However, THC metabolites can be detected in hair and urine for up to 30 days after use.

Is HHC legal?

In the US, it is a regulatory fluid state and is regulated differently by each state. It is therefore essential to check and comply with local legislation.

In the EU, the situation is clearer, with most countries prohibiting its use. The situation can be seen in the figure below:

Conclusion

HHC is a new synthetic cannabinoid with a similar chemical structure to THC and exhibits psychoactive effects.

It became established in Europe in 2022 and has become a major player in the cannabis market. Its use has stemmed from its perception as a legal and safer alternative to traditional cannabis products. This is not the case. Slovenia placed HHC on the list of banned substances at the end of 2023.
