CBD for cats

Cats. Crazy, loving and funny, all at the same time. We can’t do without them, as they make us laugh with their antics and warm our hearts when they wrap themselves around our legs in the evening. They are also therapeutic for us, and help us release the hormones of happiness. What could be better than a soft, fluffy ball of luck? There is nothing better. And that’s exactly why our fluffy friends deserve only the best. But just as we get older, so do our pets. Therefore, we must do everything in our power to help them experience better health and well-being.

It is crucial that we take preventive care of our cat’s health and help in any way we can. Today, we will try to find out whether CBD for cats can help with various health problems.

What is CBD?

Cannabidiol (CBD) is the major cannabinoid in industrial cannabis. CBD is a cannabinoid that does not cause psychotropic effects and does not cause side effects, even with long-term use. Many different CBD products for humans and animals have entered the market in recent years. The beneficial effects of CBD are due to the endocannabinoid system (ECS), which is not only present in the human body; it is also present in many animals, such as cats, dogs, fish, and birds.

Cats and CBD

Many cat and pet owners have begun to wonder how CBD can help their four-legged friends. More and more people are reaching for CBD products and noticing a better quality of life for their pets. Because of this, there is now a lot of interest in whether CBD can really benefit their pets.

Like all living things, cats begin to experience various problems as they age. The most common health problems with cats are dental, followed by injuries, skin problems, digestive problems and parasite infections.

Is CBD safe for cats?

Despite the great popularity of CBD, we expect more research on the long-term safety of pet use in the future. But let’s take a look at some studies published recently:

Justyna E Kulpa and others (2021) published a study addressing the safety and tolerance to CBD and THC in healthy cats. The purpose of this study was to determine the safety and tolerability of increasing doses of orally administered cannabidiol (CBD), tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) and a combination of both cannabinoids.

The results suggest that CBD is safe for cats, even at high doses up to 30.5 mg/kg. All the adverse reactions observed in the study were mild, transient, and resolved without medical intervention. Side effects were more common with oils that contained THC.

The full spectrum of cannabinoids is important for the synergy of action, but our CBD products do not exceed 0.2% THC, and PharmaHemp CBD pet drops have a particularly low THC content. The drops are produced in a GMP-certified environment and the cannabinoid content is verified in our accredited laboratory.

Cannabidiol (CBD) products are increasingly being used for dogs and cats to treat anxiety-related disorders, seizures, cancer and pain.

A study in cats found that CBD is safe in healthy adult cats, and not just dogs, which was previously confirmed in studies.

In our blog we discussed how CBD affects osteoarthritic dogs. We found that a dose of 2 mg of CBD per kg of animal body weight, twice daily, increased the well-being and activity of dogs with osteoarthritis. Similar doses are suitable for cats.

Advantages and disadvantages of CBD for cats

We have found that CBD is safe for cats, but more research is needed to prove the specific effects and benefits.

Some studies suggest that the potential effects of pain relief and the reduction of swelling could be discovered. In humans, as well as in cats, dogs, birds, etc., for which additional research is needed.

However, cat owners can also use CBD as a preventative measure. This means that we can consider the use of CBD for the prevention of certain diseases.

Conclusion

CBD will not harm cats and should not cause any serious side effects. However, we need to be careful, as further research is needed on the use of CBD for cats. If we decide to introduce CBD to our cats, we can build on the research done on dogs. However, consulting a veterinarian is definitely recommended before offering your cat CBD.

The bottom line is that our cats are special. CBD is used to alleviate their problems, and so why not take care of them if we can.
